Writing a job post to optimize your recruitment advertising efforts

Writing a job posting can easily feel like a daunting process, especially when you’re not sure where to start. This article quickly summarizes the guidelines you should follow as suggested by popular platforms such as Indeed, ZipRecruiter, and Talroo. A great job posting will provide you with qualified applicants, improve your recruitment advertising results, and keep your hiring managers happy.

Job Title:

It’s tempting to create a more eye-catching job title like “Forklift Operator Extraordinaire,” but this isn’t what job seekers will be entering in the search bar. Keep your job titles simple and to the point, like “Forklift Operator” or “Warehouse Associate.”

Job Description:

  1. Readability

You don’t want your description to look like an essay you wrote in high school. It needs to be easy for applicants to read and understand.

  • Use bullet points rather than long paragraphs and use headings to break up sections
  • Keep sentences concise and straightforward
  • Don’t use jargon or overly complicated words
  • Limit paragraphs to 3 or 4 sentences
  1. Tone

Keep your tone conversational and upbeat but still professional. A good practice to follow is to write like you’re talking to the applicant face-to-face. At the end of the day, you’re writing for a person.

  1. What to Include

While the shorter, the better, you still want your description to include what matters. Make sure to have…

  • Pay
  • Location of Job
  • Mandatory qualifications
  • Benefits
  • Shift info
  • Type of job (full-time, part-time, contract, etc.)

Not seeing enough applicants?

Ask yourself if you can remove any of the qualifications. If not, try changing your qualifications to questions rather than close-ended statements. For instance, ask, “Do you have experience driving a forklift?” rather than “Must have 3 years of experience driving a forklift”.

If your description looks like an essay you wrote in high school… shorten your sentences, make bulleted lists, use headers, and remove unnecessary info.

If you’re still not seeing enough applicants, sponsor your jobs. Sponsoring jobs will improve the visibility of your posting, subsequently bringing you more applicants. Indeed estimates that employers are 4.5x more likely to hire when they sponsor their job on indeed.
